Guides, Grid & Slices Preferences: Precision Layout Tools

These settings control the visual appearance of your layout aids. Configuring high-contrast colors for your guides and grids ensures that your alignment tools remain visible regardless of the colors in your artwork, preventing eye strain and placement errors.

  • Canvas Guides: Cyan (Solid Line)
  • Smart Guides: Magenta
  • Grid: Custom Gray (2cm Every / 4 Subdivisions)
  • Show Slice Numbers: Enabled
  • Path Options: 1px (Default Blue)
Under the Guides Section
  • 1. Canvas & Artboard Guides (Customizes your manual layout lines)

  • Color: The default Cyan is industry standard, but if you are working on a blue-heavy image, your guides will become invisible. Use this menu to switch to a high-contrast color like Magenta or Red when needed.
  • Style: You can choose between Solid Lines or Dashed Lines. Solid lines are generally easier to see at low zoom levels.

Navigation: Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices > Guides

  • 2. Smart Guides (The ultimate tool for instant alignment)

Smart Guides appear automatically as you move layers, showing you exactly when an object is aligned to the center or edges of another layer.

  • Color: Magenta is the default because it rarely appears naturally in photos, making the alignment lines pop. This is a must-have for UI/UX and layout designers.

Navigation: Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices > Smart Guides

Under the Grid Section
  • 3. Gridline Every & Subdivisions (Sets up your underlying alignment matrix)

This is essential for creating structured layouts or icon sets.

  • Gridline Every: Sets the main “thick” grid lines. (e.g., 2 Centimeters).
  • Subdivisions: Sets how many “thin” lines appear between the main gridlines. Setting this to 4 means you have a secondary line every 0.5cm.
  • Pro Tip: For web/UI design, change the units to Pixels and set “Gridline Every” to 8 or 10 for a pixel-perfect design system.

Under the Slices, Path & Controls Sections
  • 4. Slices & Slice Numbers (For web asset exporting)

If you use the Slice Tool (C) to chop up a layout for web code, keep Show Slice Numbers checked so you can easily identify which asset is which in your export folder.

  • 5. Path & Control Colors (Visibility for Pen Tool and Transform handles)

  • Path Options: Controls the color and thickness of your Pen Tool paths. If you find the thin blue line hard to see on high-resolution monitors, increase the thickness to 2px.
  • Controls: Changes the color of the “bounding box” handles when using Free Transform (Ctrl + T). Keeping this at Default (Blue) works for most, but High Contrast can help in busy compositions.
